Introduction
Long-duration bases on the Moon and Mars will test more than engineering. What Lunar and Martian Bases Can Teach About Human Flourishing
The importance of crew resilience extends beyond spaceflight.
A lunar or Martian habitat compresses many of the challenges that advanced technological societies may face more broadly: dependence on complex automated systems, small-group cooperation under pressure, information overload, remote work, human-AI collaboration and the need to maintain meaning and wellbeing in highly engineered environments.
In that sense, off-Earth settlements function as social laboratories as much as engineering testbeds. They allow researchers to examine how people adapt when intelligent machines become deeply integrated into daily life and when local communities must solve problems with limited outside support.
For the wider AI bloom vision, this is a significant question. If advanced AI eventually helps create far greater material abundance, scientific capability and civilisational resilience, success will still depend on human psychology.
